ENGL 232 - West African Fiction 3 Credit Hours This course will engage a range of fiction from anglophone West Africa by authors “canonical” and otherwise. The emphasis will be on the complexities of the West African anglophone postcolonial realities, raising issues of gender, ethnicity, and religion in relation to the consequences of decades of political instability and economic underdevelopment resulting from the African slave trade and colonialism. Through literary analysis and examination of how these factors intersect with contemporary postcolonial theories, students will learn to recognize connections between West African cultural history and the contemporary Western world.
