LAS 122 - The Humanity of Mathematics

3 Credit Hours
What is mathematical thinking? How can thinking mathematically contribute to personal growth, both as learners and as humans? In this class we’ll explore our relationship to and attitudes about mathematics, as well as the history of inequality in mathematics education and how mathematics can be used as a force for social justice. We’ll use simple examples that don’t require any mathematical background to see how a mathematical approach to problem-solving can be useful in fields outside of mathematics. Our goal is both to discover the meaning of critical thinking and to discover the humanity of mathematics, its beauty, its elegance, and its dignity, which is also in part the dignity of the human mind.
