ENGL 221 - Literature of the African Diaspora 3 Credit Hours This course will examine works by contemporary writers from Africa and the African diaspora. The term “African diaspora” refers to the various nations Africans were dispersed to during the African slave trade, including: North America, the Caribbean, South America, and Europe. This course will look into how the enslavement and dispersal of Africans during the slave trade influences the themes and traditions represented by writers of African descent throughout the world today. In looking at these themes as emblematic of a shared cultural history partially inherited from African tradition, students will analyze how these themes also represent the traditions and values of those nations to which African slaves were dispersed. This course is open to both majors and non-majors.
