ENGL 223 - African-American Popular Culture 3 Credit Hours This course will focus on the production of “pop” culture in the United States, with special emphasis on the linkages between mainstream pop culture and pop culture originating in the African- American experience. The course will provide sociological, historical, and theoretical perspectives for understanding topics related to black film, R&B, literature, disco, art, and rap/hip-hop. Through the use of music, film, dance, and literary and visual arts, students will gain insight into ways that pop culture often serves to solidify the American populaces understanding of its national, racial, and cultural identities; especially as they relate to the unique contributions made by African- Americans to popular culture.

Prerequisite(s): ENGL 101 or CRWS 101 or equivalent.
This course will satisfy the core area requirement in literature.
