CAS 265 - Documentary Film Credit Hours 3 This course will help students learn the different techniques, genres, and cultural approaches to making documentaries. The course intends to present documentary films as a non-fiction storytelling form that can present truths and perspectives to empower people in their lives, their communities, and their societies. At the same time, documentary films can be used to present biased perspectives on reality that may mislead or create a false narrative. Students in this course will learn how to analyze and critique all such films by examining the history of documentary filmmaking and the types of documentaries that have emerged in different historical periods and global cultures. Overall, students will come to learn how to engage with documentary films as records of peoples and events that can reinforce or challenge traditional conceptions of the world.
