FREN 355 - French and Francophone Fairy Tales Credit Hours 3 Cocteau, Demy, Renoir, Malle, Ocelot, Breillat, Alnoy - all brilliant French and Francophone directors who turned to children’s stories to produce films best suited for grownups. What is our fascination with these not so whimsical tales of danger and magic? What values do we wish to inculcate in our children? Students will read fairy tales by Perrault, Hoffman, and West African griots, and will compare written texts to their film adaptations and their interpretations in dance and opera. Students will analyze literary texts and critique performances of the texts, tracing similarities in technique and style across media.
* Taught in French.
Prerequisite(s): FREN 202 or consent of instructor.
This course will satisfy the core area requirement in literature.
