LAS 493 - Love’s Failings and Fruition 3 hours This seminar will examine how what we love and the way we love plays a major role in attaining a good life. Readings from philosophy, religion, and literature will help us explore the link between love and morality. Some works, like the Inferno, Othello and The Bluest Eye will help us analyze the failings of corrupted or immature love. Other writers, like St Augustine, Thich Nhat Hahn, and Thomas Merton, will offer us wonderful insight into the traits and benefits of higher, holier love. We will examine how some loves are self-centered and exploitative whereas others seek nurture, worship, and communion.
