HIST 320 - The African-American Experience to 1877



This course examines and analyzes the variety of economic, social, cultural, and religious experiences in African-American communities from the colonial era to the end of Reconstruction. This course focuses on the construction of a distinct African-American culture and identity in the face of slavery, the complexity of the free African-American community in the North, and the persistent political struggle for freedom and equality found in the actions, rhetoric, and faith of African-American men and women during this period. (3 hours)

Prerequisite(s): ENGL 102  or consent of department.

This course will satisfy the history core area and multicultural core requirements.
