HNHI 400 - American Empire3 hours
This course studies invasions, coups and other interventions carried out by the United States from 1805 to the present. Our guiding questions will be: Why did Americans decide to carry out a particular intervention? How was it communicated, or “sold” to the public? How was the intervention executed? What have been its long-term effects? We will also look for patterns that help explain what drives the United States to intervene in other countries, what tools it has available for these interventions, and what lessons American leaders learn from the successes or failures of intervention. We will also seek to apply what we have learned, considering the prospects for future interventions and trying to estimate their chances for success.
Prerequisite(s): Honor Program students only or consent of Honors Department.
