ITAL 501 - Dante and the Middle Ages

3 Credit Hours
Born in Florence in 1265 and considered the father of the Italian language, Dante Alighieri was a poet, linguist, theorist, philosopher, and political thinker. Through close readings of Dante’s two main works, La Vita Nuova and La Commedia, students will explore the development of Duecento and Trecento lyric poetry and the historical, political, religious, and literary context in which Dante’s works were conceived and circulated. Medieval and contemporary art and modern media will be explored as commentary to Dante’s written word. 

Prerequisite(s): Registration requires consent of department. For graduate level students only.
