3 hours
This course provides an overview of the early history of the written word, focusing on the use of texts from antiquity up to the age of the printing press. Site visits to local repositories provide hands-on experience with papyri, clay tablets, parchment, vellum, and rare books. Readings and discussions will explore what is meant by the term “text” in order to deeply investigate the methodologies of book history and textual criticism. Offered in spring.
