LAS 284 - Travel and Migration
This course will look at the cultural consequences of the movement of peoples across religious, political, ethnic, and geographic boundaries. We will focus on three disparate regions - the Eastern Mediterranean, Central Asia, and modern America. For each region, we will read primary texts or literary sources from inside and outside the region, focusing particularly on the narratives of those travelers whose lives and journeys cross over the cultural divides. We will inquire how communities form in relation and opposition to each other, and how difference can nourish a civilization or tear it apart. (3 hours)
